If you have ever wanted to attend a pole competition or showcase, this is the year to do it. This year has already shown us some pretty amazing pole dancers, but don't worry if you haven't been able to make it to a show yet, there are still some competitions and showcases this year that are not to be missed!
The North American Pole Dance Championship and Great Midwest Competition and Convention will be held Friday, August 24, 2012 to Sunday, August 26, 2012 in Tinley Park, Illinois. According to their website: "In August 2010, Midwest Pole Dancing announced plans for the first professional pole dance competition to be held within the Midwest region. While other smaller competitions had been run, the Midwest competition was the first to use internationally recognized pole judges, to be sanctioned by the Pole Fitness Association and the international Pole Dance and Fitness Association, as well as to use judging standards recognized by both organizations." This will be an entire weekend filled with workshops, showcases, presentations and exhibits -- all pole-related! (PS : The Girl Spot's owner, Judy Jovanelly, has been selected to compete in the Master's Division of the Midwest competition!)
If Chicago isn't in the cards, Roz The Diva, will be hosting Dangerous Curves in New York the same weekend (Saturday, August 25, 2012) "Dangerous Curves seeks to highlight the unique contributions of plus size pole athletes. 'Plus size' has traditionally been defined those who wear a size 12 or above. If you fall outside this range but still identify yourself as a plus size athlete, you are absolutely encouraged to audition! The performer with the most dangerous curves, determined by the audience, will get special recognition. A second recognition, The Diva's Award, will be given to the athlete who has demonstrated the greatest commitment to uplifting others."
On Saturday, September 29, 2012, the US Pole Dance Federation is holding it's fourth annual US Pole Dance Championships in New York City. According to their website: "USPDF considers pole dancing a sensual athletic dance form that demands coordination, flexibility, sensuality, creativity, individual style, and physical strength. All these elements are equally important in USPDF competitions. Competitors come from various backgrounds all over the US. All competitors train at the level of professional athletes and dancers, which include a rigid schedule of pole practice, dance classes, stretch and flexibility classes, coaching and choreographers. They also work with additional professionals, such as nutritionists and massage therapists." Natasha Wang is the current the USPDF Champion. There will be workshops held all weekend in connection with the competition.
On Friday October 12, 2012, the American Pole Fitness Association will host their third annual American Pole Fitness Championships in New York City. "APFA present the American Pole Fitness Championships™ featuring male and female competitors. The event is an annual championship which features the nation’s best pole fitness performers demonstrating their mesmerizing jaw dropping skills, physical strength and sheer stamina through choreographed routines created by the performers themselves." The current champions are Flying Laura Martin and Derick Pierson.
